I love cooking – for me, it’s almost a form of self-care and I love taking the time to get creative in the kitchen and preparing food. Healthy cooking, clean eating and that dreaded word ‘diet’, can all make eating healthy sound like a dull, boring and monotonous task. I wanted to share some tips with you that will make your food anything BUT boring!

Condiments, spices, fresh and dry herbs all add amazing flavours to your food that only help to add variety to your cooking but they can quite literally add a bit of spice in your life!

Salt can bring out the flavours, add sweetness and reduce bitterness.

  • Pink Himalayan sea salt
  • Coconut aminos
  • Nutritional Yeast flakes

Sweet flavours can help to reduce any bitterness or sourness and they can also help to reduce sweet cravings (such as cinnamon). Be mindful when adding sweet flavours to your dishes and add them to your dishes in small amounts – consider portion sizing and add them in a little at a time.

  • Dates
  • Maple syrup
  • Stevia

Adding nuts to your meals are a great way to add variety, not only in taste but in texture as well! Plus, when you add nuts to your dishes (as long as you don’t have allergies!) you get all those amazing nutrients into your diet – healthy fats are essential for optimum health as they are needed for a variety of functions around the body. They are especially needed for the proper absorption of fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. Again, just be mindful of portion sizing.

  • Almond butter
  • Chia seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds

Sour flavours can enhance the saltiness of your dish as well as reduce any sweetness and spicy elements.

  • Sauerkraut
  • Lemons
  • Balsamic vinegar

Spices add heat, warmth and energy to your food.

  • Garam masala
  • Cumin
  • Turmeric
  • Wasabi
  • Ginger
