Over the past couple of months, I have fallen totally head over heels in love with blueberries! Seriously…not joking – I have had a punnet of them almost every single day. Yes, they are yummy, they look pretty but they are also super good for you! In fact, they are often labelled a ‘super food’, they are that good! Bonus.

So just to give you a quick low down on them:

  • Blueberries are about 85% water, and we all know how I love my water intake!
  • They have 57kcals per 100g
  • They contain 2.4g fibre per 100g
  • They contain 14g carbohydrates per 100g
  • And…this is a big one, they contain substantial amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese as well as various other nutrients.


Basically blueberries are super low in calories but high in nutrients and are grouped alongside the most nutrient dense berries.


There are a tonne of benefits of eating blueberries - here are just some to name a few:

  • Some studies have shown that blueberries can help with high blood pressure, which is one of the causes of heart disease. They also promote heart health and may even reduce the risk of heart disease.
  • Again, some studies have shown that they may help with cancers due to their gallic acid content.
  • Studies have shown that they may play a role in brain health, even delaying age-related decline of brain function in individuals. Overall, having a higher intake in flavonoid-rich foods (such as the magnificent blueberry) has been associated with better brain function. Whoop! We all need that!
  • Some studies have shown that they may lower blood sugar levels and can even improve insulin sensitivity, therefore they have the potential to help those with type 2 diabetes.

Tick, tick, tick and TICK in my book! They’re all super great reasons to start eating more blueberries every day, but I love them for even more than just those few reasons. This is why I love them so much, and why in all honesty I’ve become totally addicted:

They help combat aging

Having grown up in a warm country and being exposed to the blazing sun for most of my life (yes I wore sun cream!), now that I’m well into my 20’s, my skin has become a major priority. Blueberries are high in antioxidants, some even say they are the KING of antioxidants, and they contain super anti-aging properties.

As well as that though, they also contain resveratrol. I’m sure almost every single one of us has heard about this magical word! It’s really hyped up in the last couple of years, coming out in a tonne of skin care products, and for good reason too. Resveratrol has been proven to reduce damage from over sun exposure.

They are awesome for your skin

In short blueberries increase circulation which helps your skin to glow – literally beautiful by blueberries! The deep blueish/purple colour in them comes from compounds called anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants that protect the skin from harmful free radicals. Those free radicals can damage the collagen that keeps the skin staying firm; blueberries help fight against that. Due to their high vitamin C content, they also help with collagen production! Keeping the skin looking youthful! I have always struggled with my skin, breaking out all the time; so anything that helps with that, I’m down with! Blueberries do just that; packed with nutrients, all those vitamins and minerals help to restore hormone balance, which helps with problematic skin.

Great for gut health

Again, we all know I love anything that supports a healthy gut. Blueberries are a natural source of soluble and insoluble fibre and can help regulate your gastrointestinal track. They are also rich in polyphenols, which have an antimicrobial and antioxidative effect, again promoting gut health.

A great snack for weight loss

Blueberries are so low in calories and carbohydrates but packed with nutrients! Therefore, they make such a great snack on the go. Plus they’re super yummy so are fantastic for adding a bit of sweetness to foods and your smoothies! Having such a great fibre content as well,

you pretty much can’t go wrong with them!
